Maintaining an active senior lifestyle really isn’t a challenge! There are a variety of ways that those living in senior homes can maintain great physical, mental, and spiritual health. These four areas of exercise are certain to keep seniors limber, energetic, and happy throughout their stay!
When seniors keep their muscles stretched and limber, they can improve overall range of motion. This means that it’s easier for them to make their beds or bend over to put on socks and tie their shoes. To maintain flexibility in arm and chest muscles, one great exercise is to stand with feet shoulder-width apart and arms at the sides. Then bring both arms behind the back and grasp hands. Seniors should hold this position for at least 30 seconds, release and repeat 10 times, and aim for two sets of 10 reps. They’ll be surprised how much this helps!
Increasing balance greatly decreases the risk of falling or broken bones in seniors. Seniors will also be able to reach for items on shelves and get dressed much easier! One great exercise for maintaining good balance for seniors is to start in a seated position using an armless chair. Seniors should keep their backs and shoulders straight, and then extend both arms parallel to the ground and slowly stand up, without using their hands to push off. Sit down and repeat 10 to 15 times for one set. Build up to two sets of chair stands. This exercise will greatly improve overall balance!
Endurance exercises improve breathing, heart health, and overall energy levels. These exercises also burn calories and help maintain joint mobility in seniors. The best endurance exercise for seniors is walking. Seniors should start with 10-15 minute walks daily and begin to increase their time spent walking as weeks go by and they begin to feel more energetic.
Increased muscle strength helps seniors remain independent so that they can go about daily activities with little to no assistance. Stronger muscles make it easier to carry and move things around their rooms like laundry or groceries. One great exercise to increase strength for seniors is to simply do some light bicep curls. Lightweight dumbbells build upper body strength, which improves seniors' ability to lift items. Seated or standing, seniors should hold the dumbbells at their sides with palms facing up and elbows tucked in. Seniors should then bend their elbows and lift the weights to the chest, and hold this position for about one second. Lower and repeat 10 times. Aim for two sets of 10 reps to build stronger biceps!
