6 Fun Ways to Bring Summer to Your Local Senior Center

Summer is a wonderful time of year, filled with sunshine, adventure, and nature. But for older Canadians who might not have the means or aren’t able to enjoy summer in the same way that they used to, summer can make them feel a bit trapped. This is especially true during extreme temperatures when it might not be safe to be outside for long periods.

Luckily, there’s a whole plethora of fun activities to take part in that can bring summer right to the seniors!

Here are a few fun ways to bring summer to the local senior center!

1. Host a Backyard Baseball Tournament in A Senior Center Near Me

There’s nothing more fun than cheering on the home team! Senior centers can invite family members or even a local baseball team to play a few games a month for the seniors to watch and cheer on!

Host this event in the backyard, a park or an outdoor space near the senior center!

This is a great way for seniors to have fun, see their loved ones, socialize, and get excited!

2. Host Ice Cream Parties at Your Senior Resource Center

Nothing says summer like ice cream!

Senior centers should encourage the residents or local community to take part in a “Make Your Own Sundae” party with lots of flavors and toppings! Families can come along, too, because everyone loves ice cream!

3. Gardening Groups at Your Seniors Center

The sun is shining and everyone’s firing up the barbecue, which means it’s the perfect time for some gardening!

If there’s room around the senior center, they can set up a small garden outside. If not, they can find a local community garden to bring the seniors to so they can plant, care for, and harvest their own home-grown veggies, herbs, and more!

Watching a garden grow and getting to enjoy the fruits (or vegetables) of your labor can be incredibly rewarding, and it allows seniors to socialize!

4. Luau Party!

Centers can deck out their outdoor areas in bright colors, flowers, coconuts, and a few tiki torches. Suddenly, it’s become the perfect atmosphere to celebrate summertime with a luau!

Make fruity cocktails and beverages, have a Hula Dancing contest, and invite the seniors to stargaze with this fun, creative party theme!

5. Weekly Barbecues

Senior centers can bring the community by hosting a huge barbecue and inviting friends to bring their classic barbecue favorites!

This is another great opportunity to invite family members to get involved, too! It can be a potluck, and ask organizers can ask everyone to bring a backyard cookout must-have like potato salad, fruit, and S’mores!

6. Field Trips

Who says everyone has to stay at the senior center? Community members and senior centers can bring their residents out into the world with trips to museums, shopping, town festivals, movies, concerts, and more!

Not only does this allow the seniors to get out and enjoy the fresh air, but this also allows them to socialize with each other, and the rest of their community!
